Hengdian World Studios is the largest film studio in the world. The studios are owned by Hengdian Group founded by Xu Wenrong. He turned several acres of farmland into film studios. It covers 330 hectares of land.
Construction of the studios started in the 1990s and is still ongoing. The Imperial Palace Building is the largest structure on the studios. An excess of 1,200 films have been shot in the place.
The Hengdian World Studios is a complete replica of Beijing’s Imperial Palace.
It is estimated that over 30,000 people live and work in Hengdian.
Hengdian World Studios has a replica of the Gate of Supreme Harmony Palace of Ming and Qing dynasties.
Visitors
In addition to being a film studio, Hengdian World Studios has become a tourist attraction site. In 2020, the place attracted 20 million visitors.
Films
A number of films such as Iron Road, The Warriors Road, Reign of Assassins, The Opium War, Dead or Alive and Snow Flower and Secret Fan have been shot at the the largest film studio in the world.
Revenue
The film sets are free for film crews. However, the company makes money from lease of costumes, hotels, equipment and restaurants. Over 70 percent of films are shot at the Hengdian World Studios.
