Several buildings experienced structural damage following the detonation of a world war II bomb according to UK police reports.
The bomb which is believed to be 1 ton in weight was identified as Hermann bomb which was used by the Nazis. It was found on a building site on private property to the west of University of Exeter on Friday morning.
The Royal Navy bomb requested for a cordon of 400 meters to be put in place as the bomb was detonated.
At least 1,400 university students and residents of 2,600 houses were evacuated to safety during the process.
To reduce the impact of the blast, approximately 400 tonnes of sand was transported to the site. In addition to that the Royal Navy bomb disposal experts and Royal Logistic Corps erected walls around the bomb.
Despite the efforts made by the bomb experts, windows were blown out and cracks were seen on buildings within 100 meters from the bomb. As a result of the detonation a crater was formed the size of a double-decker bus.
Police have warned residents not to return until further notice.
