South Korea has recorded the lowest fertility rate in the world, breaking their own record of 2020. A research conducted in 2021 indicated that South Korea women have the lowest fertility.
In 2021, South Korea, a woman was found to have an average of 0.81 children in her whole life. This average beats the previous year’s fertility rate by 0.03%.
Decrease in fertility in South Korean women has been a norm since 2015.
In 2020, the number of deaths was higher than births in South Korea. Majority of women are preferring to have children later in life. An average of age at which women gave birth was 33.4 years.
Population in South Korea is increasingly consisting of older people due to decrease in birth rates. When the number of elder population is large compared to the young population, the country suffers a risk of lacking working age.
On the other hand, the United States recorded fertility rate of 1.6 while Japan recorded 1.3 in 2021.
Meanwhile, the African countries recorded the highest number of fertility rate.
The best average of fertility rate is 2.1, this enables the country to maintain stable population.
When the South Korean women were asked the why the decrease in fertility, they claimed they did not have time for dating. Most of the women spend most of their time in careers.
They also claimed that they did not have money and emotional capacity to do dates.
However, the South Korean women has introduced measures to reduce the decrease in fertility rate. This include; giving both parent a parental leave at the same time.
