After Will Smith slapped Chris Rock at the Oscars, he was asked to leave but refused. This has been revealed by the Academy of Motion Pictures and Sciences.
The Academy’s board of directors met on Wednesday 30th March to commence a disciplinary proceeding against one Will Smith for violating the academy’s standards of conduct.
The academy revealed that they had various options such as sanctions, expulsion, and suspension.
The Academy spoke to the Associated Press.
“Things unfolded in a way we could not have anticipated.
“While we would like to clarify that Mr. Smith was asked to leave the ceremony and refused, we also recognize we could have handled the situation differently.”
“Mr. Rock, we apologize to you for what you experienced on our stage and thank you for your resilience in that moment. We also apologize to our nominees, guests and viewers for what transpired during what should have been a celebratory event.”
The academy indicated that Will Smith will have a chance to defend himself in a written format before the academy sits next time on 18 April.
