WhatsApp is deploying AI to weed out fake news as India heads into elections
There are approximately 200 million WhatsApp users in India. The company which owns the app has plans to make use of artificial intelligence in its fight against fake news.
India is going into elections and more than 800 million Indians have registered as voters. WhatsApp has also issued warning to all political parties across the country against spreading spam messages which are politically instigated.
As you may be aware, WhatsApp is owned by Facebook and it is making efforts to not only detect but also ban accounts which spread rumors and other related content.
In the last three months, WhatsApp reported that they banned a total of 6 million users across the world in the last three months.
If you send a large number of messages within a short period of time, you risk having your account banned.
These are the precautions that the company is taking in its efforts to make sure their platform is not misused in the face of elections.
“We saw how parties tried to reach people over WhatsApp, and in some cases that involved attempting to use WhatsApp in a way that it was not intended to be used,” said Carl Woog, Head of Communications WhatsApp Inc.
India is the biggest global market for WhatsApp. The platform has been misused by some people in the country through misinformation.
