We discuss how worldcoin works. This week, Kenyans were involved in a project founded by Open AI known as worldcoin. This is a new cryptocurrency project by Sam Altman.
An excess of 350,000 Kenyans have been registered in a project launched globally last week. The irises of those Kenyans were scanned in return for 25 free cryptocurrency tokens.
One such token is valued at Ksh. 344.90 in Kenya. Therefore, for the irish scan each Kenyan received Ksh. 8,256.
Government stopped the exercise over data security concerns. However, OpenAI insists that the data collected is secure.
Individuals who sign up received a world ID. To get the ID you are not required to share your personal data such as name, phone number, home address or email address.
“The World ID sign-up process is only intended to verify an individual’s uniqueness – i.e., that they have not previously signed up and received a World ID,” adds Worldcoin.
The government of Kenya suspended Worldcoin to pave way for investigations by “relevant security, financial services and data protection agencies” into their legality and authenticity.
Early on the Information Commission Office of United Kingdom were making inquiries about worldcoin. On the other hand the Privacy watchdog in France says that they bio-metric data collection activities “seems questionable.”
