Watford FC have followed Aston Villa and Brighton and Hove Albion in publicly opposing use of neutral venues in the Premier League’s proposed Project Restart plan.
Watford chief executive Scott Duxbury says neutral venues would compromise fairness and integrity of the sport.
‘’If we start and finish a whole season under these conditions and at neutral venues when everybody knows the rules when we start, not created at a time of crisis, then that is clearly fair. To be asked to finish a quarter of the season under new rules and conditions is an entirely different proposition.’’ Said Duxbury.
Duxbury believes ‘’safe environment’’ can be created for those who would attend matches at their home ground, Vicarage Road.
Premier League sides will be allowed to vote whether to use neutral venues. 14 out of 20 clubs must vote in favour for it to be adopted.
The Premier League has suspended since mid-March due to coronavirus pandemic but is aiming to restart in June. Most teams are left with 9 games to play.
Bundesliga will be returning to action as from 16th May and teams will be using their own stadiums for the remaining fixtures.
Watford FC are 17th in the Premier League table with 27 points after 29 games.
