This is the 3rd busiest airport in Kenya after Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) and Wilson Airport both in Nairobi.
The Wajir International Airport is situated 490 kilometers from JKIA.
The airport was constructed by HZ (a construction company from Israel) between 1977 to 1978. It was initially used exclusively as a military airbase for Kenya Air force.
It was commission for both military and civil aviation on 7th September, 2007.
There are approximately 100 people working at the airport and most of them are police officers. The security of the place is tight considering that there are two military camps near the airport.
The airport handles at least 7 flights per day.
It is compulsory for all flights from Somalia to make a stop-over in Wajir for security checks and clearance before landing at JKIA or Wilson.
Somalia-Kenya border is 100 kilometers away from Wajir International Airport.
