Following the arrival of the three Venezuelans, IEBC chairman Chebukati has assured Kenyan citizens that the upcoming elections will be free and fair.
This comes after the three Venezuela nationals were arrested a Jomo Kenyatta International Airport charged for smuggling of election stickers. However, IEBC has maintained that the foreigners were in the country to perform and execute a lawful conduct. This causes controversy between the IEBC and the Directorate of Criminal Investigation.
On the other hand, IEBC Chair Chebukati who is the IEBC chair has said that the stickers carried by the foreigners are for identification of voting kits.
“For easy identification of the KIEMS kits, Smartmatic is required to provide stickers to aid in labeling each of the kits for purposes of packaging and dispatch to all polling stations. The deployment of the KIEMS kits is currently underway.
“It is important to note that the stickers are non-strategic election materials. The stickers were printed based on the details of the gazette notice published on 1st July, 2022. The stickers contain information on the polling station, polling center, ward, constituency and county as well as a unique bar code,” said Chebukati
“The Commission holds regular meetings with Smartmatic to review the project status and ensure delivery of milestones in line with the Elections Operations Plan (EOP). To date, the project’s progress is on track,” he added.
