The USA has signed a ‘peace deal’ agreement with the Taliban of Afghanistan. This came up after two years of serious negotiations which happened in Doha, Qatar. This is an historic agreement which is expected to bring to an end the war between the USA military and Taliban group which has been ongoing since 2001.
Phase 1 of the deal provides for a one week of no fighting. The peace deal was signed in the presence of diplomats from India, USA, Pakistan and other representatives of UN member states. The deal was signed at Sheraton Hotel located in Doha, Qatar.
The deal provides for departure of 6,400 American soldiers will leave Afghanistan out of the total 13,000 stationed in the country. This will happened within a period of 4 months from the time of signing the peace deal.
Taliban on the other hand is required to adhere to certain anti-terrorism conditions. The US soldiers will be pulled out of Afghanistan for good within a period of 14 months. After the withdrawal Taliban will take control of their country.
A US Special Representative for Afghanistan Reconciliation called Zalmay Khalilzad is the lead negotiator for the US and President Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar represented Afghanistan. Mike Pompeo was the witness of the signing ceremony.
“will closely watch the Taliban’s compliance with their commitments, and calibrate the pace of our withdrawal to their actions,” said Mike Pompeo of the USA.
“This is how will ensure that Afghanistan never again serves for international terrorists,” he added.
The Taliban ordered their fighters to stop any attacks for the sake of “happiness of the nation.”
“Nearly 19 years ago, American service members went to Afghanistan to root out the terrorists responsible for the 9/11 attacks. In that time, we have made great progress in Afghanistan, but at great cost to our brave service members, to the American taxpayers, and to the people of Afghanistan,” Said President Donald Trump of the United States.
