In a statement on its website, the US embassy say there is a high risk of contracting the virus in Dar es Salaam, the country’s commercial hub.
According to the American embassy, the government of Tanzania has not released data on coronavirus cases in Tanzania since 29th April.
‘’Despite limited official reports, all evidence points to exponential growth of epidemic in Dar and other locations in Tanzania.’’ Read the statement.
‘’The embassy has strongly recommended that US government personnel and their families remain at home except for essential activities (eg grocery shopping) and substantially limit into [their] private homes the entry of anyone but regular residents.’’
The statement further notes that hospitals in Dar es Salaam have been overwhelmed in recent weeks.
‘’Limited hospital capacity throughout Tanzania could result in life threatening delays for medical care, including for those with Covid-19.’’
The US embassy confirmed that the US government is also not arranging any repatriation flights at this time and US citizens must be prepared to remain abroad for an indefinite period of time.
