Unai Emery has been sacked as Arsenal manager after 18 months in charge. He has been replaced on interim basis by his assistant and former Arsenal player Fred Ljungberg.
The 48 year old Spaniard previously managed Paris St Germain and led them to a French Ligue One title and also won three Europa League titles with Sevilla.
Arsenal decided to sack him on Friday due to a series of poor performances. The Gunners have not won in seven matches and lost 2-1 to Eintracht Frankfurt at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday. This is Arsenal’s worst run since February 1992 when they played 8 matches without a win.
Arsenal is currently at position 8 in the Premier League Table with 18 points after 13 games. The Gunners are without a victory in the English Premier League since 6th October and are 8 points off the top four position.
This was Emery’s second season in charge. In his first Season, Emery finished fifth in the Premier League. The Club spent over £130M on new signings and the investment hasn’t paid off.
Arsenal meanwhile are in the Process of searching for a new Head Coach and will make an announcement once the process is complete.
Fred Ljungberg took the team through the Friday training session. Unai Emery had a chance to say a goodbye to the team.
Ljungberg posted on social media: “However long I oversee Arsenal for I will give everything I have to put smiles on faces again. We have a busy few weeks ahead and the team needs your support. Let’s get to work.”
The Arsenal Supporters’ Trust (AST) said Emery’s dismissal was “unfortunate but inevitable” and the “more difficult challenge is to recruit a suitable successor”
The candidates who could replace Unai Emery at Arsenal include Wolves manager Nuno Espirito Santo, Manchester City assistant Head Coach Mikel Arteta, Former Tottenham Hotspurs manager Mauricio Pochettinho and former Juventus manager Massimiliano Allegri.
Unai Emery is the third manager in the Premier League to be sacked this season, after Javi Garcia and Mauricio Pochettinho left Watford and Tottenham Hotspurs respectively.
