Government of Uganda is planning to evacuate its 2400 nationals stranded in 66 countries due to restrictions resulting from coronavirus pandemic, the Daily Nation reports.
Foreign minister Sam Kutesa of Government of Uganda confirmed the plans on Tuesday.
Mr Kutesa said that the Ugandan government is in consultations with the airline companies, the UN and the countries involved.
Flight restrictions have made it very difficult for Ugandans to return home.
Mr Kutesa said that only those who have tested negative will be allowed to return home. They will undergo a two-week mandatory quarantine and testing before being released to the communities.
Government of Uganda is in talks with airlines such as Ethiopian Airlines to arrange to pick Ugandans from different locations and gather them at a central place before arranging for special flights to bring them home.
Discussions are also ongoing with the UN, with the Government of Uganda asking the agency to consider placing stranded Ugandans on humanitarian flights.
