Sharing is Caring

The United States of America is returning to the UN Human Rights Council after walking away.

The UN General Assembly is responsible for electing new members for the Council.

Members who are elected spend three years on the Council. The Council is responsible for protecting human rights globally.

The United States of America under President Donald Trump quit the Council in 2018 citing hypocrisy and obsession with haranguing Israel.

Now USA is returning under President Joe Biden.

“The Chinese and all those who are fundamentally against human rights as Europeans understand them…oppose economic, social and cultural rights. It is now a new trend, but it is undeniably growing stronger,” said one European diplomat.

Another diplomat believes that China is determined to destroy the universality of human rights.

The UN Human Rights Council is made up of 47 member states who are elected by the UN General Assembly with headquarters in New York.

A third of the membership are elected every year and countries only serve for two terms of three years each.

The presence of Eritrea in the UN Human Rights Council has raised concerns on why authoritarian regimes with poor human rights records are allowed to hold seats at the council.
