The picture of fun in Saudi Arabia
As you may be aware, women were not allowed to drive cars in Saudi Arabia until recently. Now Los Angeles Times in painting a picture of what fun looks like in Saudi Kingdom.
The kingdom is allowing women to have fun on their own homeland by allowing theater performances For instance, one night at Al Comedy Club in Jidda a port city on the Red Sea, was preparing to take advantage of the new freedom of women to drive and a comedian asked women in attendance what kind of car they dream of driving.
“Mercedes,” one called out. “Maserati,” said another woman.
“Just like that? First car a Maserati?” the comedian answered.
“You ask a guy what he wants to get, he’ll say a Hyundai. That’s because he’s paying for it!”
Just 6 years ago, no comedy was allowed in Saudi Arabia. Now it is. Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince, Mohammed Bin Salman is on a mission to modernize Saudi Arabia.
Right now “fun” is the keyword in the Kingdom.
This is a good approach considering that Saudis spend billions of dollars annually on leisure activities abroad.
Expansion into provision of leisure such as opening cinema and other entertainment joints is one of the efforts aimed at diversifying the country’s oil dependent economy.
Saudi Arabia is hoping that citizens will spend more of their entertainment money in Saudi Arabia than pursuit of entertainment abroad.
