There has been a lot of hullabaloo about the ICPD 25 Summit which is schedule to start tomorrow 12th to 16th November, 2019. A group of interest groups are claiming that the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) has a hidden agenda to promote LGBT and abortion in Kenya.
In fact some interest groups such as Citizen Go and others marched to Harambee House in Nairobi to express their anger at the planned meeting. On this matter I dare say that we need to exercise tolerance for divergent ideas. We do not have to say and express the same ideas. If your neighbour has a different idea than yours let them express their opinions as long as it does not interfere with your own rights.
The Speaker of Nairobi City County Assembly officially welcomed all Members of County Assembly to attend the meeting at KICC as indicated in the extract from the Hansard report below:
Hon. Members, allow me to give a communication under our Standing Order No. 45 (e). Hon. Members, I wish to convey a communication regarding the ICPD 25 Summit in Nairobi City County. Hon. Members, as you may be aware, from 12th to 14th November 2019, the Governments of Kenya and Denmark and UNFPA are co-convening the Nairobi Summit on ICPD25, a high-level conference to mobilize the political will and financial commitments centered around achieving the need for family planning information, zero preventable maternal deaths, zero sexual & gender-based violence and harmful practices against women and girls. The summit will be taking place in at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre with accreditation of the same at the Chatter Hall.
Hon. Members, the Summit aims to bring everyone together: heads of state, ministers, parliamentarians, thought-leaders, technical experts, civil society organizations, grassroots organizations, young people, business and community leaders, faith-based organizations, indigenous peoples, international financial institutions, people with disabilities, academics and many others interested in the pursuit of sexual and reproductive health and rights. Accordingly, Hon. Members, you have all been invited to attend the summit for the interest of your electorates.
