President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya has responded to the ICJ judgement on the Somalia v Kenya maritime row.
“Kenya is not surprised by the decision… Kenya wishes to indicate that it rejects in totality and does not recognize the findings in the decision,” said President Kenyatta in his comments.
The president added that the International Court of Justice has neither jurisdiction nor competence on the boundary dispute.
He said that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) did not allow the use of regional dispute resolution mechanism such as the African Union legal frameworks on border issues.
Kenyatta noted that the decision made was a zero-sum game which will further increase the strain between Kenya and Somalia.
“As a devoted member of the United Nations, the UN Security Council as well as the AU Peace and Security Council, we call upon the rest of the international community to appreciate and respect our inherent right to protect by all available means our territory,” President Uhuru Kenyatta.
