African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights is delivering a reparations judgement on the Ogiek case.
The Ogiek community has been waiting for this day for the last five years. It can be remembered that the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights delivered the Ogiek ruling on 23rd May 2017 ruling in favor of the Ogiek.
African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights in Arusha ruled that the government of Kenya had violated the rights of the Ogiek People as guaranteed by the African Charter of Human and Peoples’ Rights.
The Government of Kenya was found guilty of violating 7 different articles of the Charter:
- Right to life
- Right to property
- Freedom from discrimination
- Culture
- Freely dispose of wealth
- Natural resources
- Development
African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights had then declared that it would rule on the issue of reparations separately on a later date.
Hon. Lady Justice Imani O. Aboud is the president of the African Court on Human and Peoples’ Rights sitting in Arusha.
