Catalan has been in the news lately due to its contested referendum which was conducted on 1st October. World leaders have responded both in support and against.
The European Commission and President Donald Trump believe that Catalan should remain part of the Spanish Union.
On the other hand Catalan has her own sympathizers: Scotland, Venezuela and Russia. It is alleged that Russian has seen an opportunity in further dividing the democratic states in Western Europe by supporting Catalan using state media and disseminating fake news on social media.
The case of Scotland is understood because they have in the past sought to secede from United Kingdom. Therefore, they support countries with similar quest. It is natural.
President Donald Trump is opposed to the idea of an independent Catalan probably due to the fact that he is facing the same pressure at home. Costa Rica wanted to secede.
