KRI Naggala 40’s oxygen supply is reported to have run out on Saturday. The submarine was participating in a topedo drill in waters 60 miles north of the Island of Bali.
The navy had previously reported that the submarine had experienced an electrical failure which made it impossible to resurface through use of emergency procedures.
The submarine was built in Germany and it was powered using diesel. It had been in service in Indonesia since 1981. It was still sea worthy.
President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo, described the sailors as Indonesia’s “best patriots.”
Australia, USA, Malaysia and India were some of the countries participating in the search for the submarine.
The submarine was one of the five in Indonesia’s fleet.
