Sri Lankan immigration officials have stopped president’s brother and former finance minister, Basil Rajapaksa, from fleeing the country as the citizens are angered by economic crisis.
The brother of the president who holds U.S. citizenship was attempting to escape to Dubai. He resigned as finance minister back in April as street protests intensified due to food and fuel shortages and in June he quit his seat in parliament.
His elder brother Gotabaya Rajapaksa is planning to resign as president on July 13 to pave way for a unity government after hundreds of thousands of protesters stormed his official residence and that of the Prime Minister demanding for their resignation.
The president has not been seen in public since Friday and it is not known where he is hiding.
