While in Lamu Old Town I noticed that speed boats have no headlights at all, they speed in darkness at night safe for a blinking light at one end of the boat.

All boats just like us people have names, I came across boats like Zuhura, Yasmin, Samrari in Lamu Old Town. Zuhura, MV Skyward and Punda Maji 2 owned by Red Cross speed boat.
However, for official identification, there is a specification person in Lamu who registers all boats and gives them unique numbers and collects the details of owners for easy of follow up in future in case of an issue happens.

Speed boats which have two engines are used for long haul of miraa from Lamu to Somalia border. This is an 8-hour business trip mostly at night and it is a lucrative business.
