Iker Cassilas has announced his retirement from football at the age of 39.

The former Real Madrid goalkeeper has played over 1000 matches in his football career.

He holds the record of most clean sheets in the Champions League.

Cassilas made over 700 appearances for Real Madrid first-team between 1999 and 2015 before joining Porto.

He won five La Liga titles and three Champions League titles during his stay at the Bernabeu.

Cassilas has not played since suffering a heart attack during a training session with FC Porto in May 2019.

He made 156 appearances for Porto, winning two Primeira Liga titles and one Portuguese Cup.

Cassilas made 167 appearances for Spain between 2000 and 2016.

 

He helped Spain win the 2010 FIFA World Cup and European Championships in 2008 and 2012.

Cassilas tweet read: ‘’ “The important thing is the path you travel and the people who accompany you, not the destination to which it takes you.

“I think I can say, without hesitation, that it has been the path and the dream destination.”
