On Wednesday, February 22, 2023 a Magistrate Court in Ntuzuna heard arguments from defence and state in a femicide case where a woman was killed by her boyfriend for refusing to have more sex after four rounds.
Zwakele Sphephelo Mgobhozi, 25, was charged with the murder of Precious pinky Yeni. He is accused of slitting the woman’s throat outside her home in Amaoti in Durban. This happened in December 2021.
On the night before the murder, it is alleged that the couple had been consuming alcoholic drinks.
Later Mgobhozi forced Yeni to have sex with him. The couple got into an argument when Mgobhozi started demanding for extra sex after they engaged in four rounds.
Yeni’s sister Promise heard the ensuring fight and made an attempt to intervene while they were inside the house.
Local authorities have indicated that Mgobhozi stepped outside and found a weapon in the form of an iron garden rake and returned inside where he hit Yeni on the head and she ran outside.
Mgobhozi chased outside where he tried to strike her again using the rake. However, she blocked the blow with her arms.
Later Mgobhozi picked a knife and after chased after her. When he caught up with her, he stabbed her in the neck area from behind and then went ahead and slit her throat.
Mgobhozi has pleaded not guilty and was behind bars for the time of the trial because the court refused to grant him bail in Jan 2022.
The victim impact statement of Promise who was at the scene when the incident happened was read out before the court.
The couple have a two-year old child together.
