Schools in South Africa will close for four weeks as from Monday after a surge in Covid-19 cases in the country.

 

Schools in South Africa reopened on July 6 for older students in Primary and Secondary.

 

However, virus cases in SA are rising at one of the fastest rates in the world.

 

The closure of schools is a precautionary measure so that schools don’t become transmission sites of the deadly virus.

 

“Taking into account the views of the various stakeholders and expert bodies, cabinet has decided that all public schools should take a break for the next four weeks,” President Ramaphosa said.

 

President Ramaphosa has also confirmed that the academic year will be extended beyond 2020 because of the disruptions by the pandemic.

 

As of Thursday, South Africa had reported a total of 408,052 coronavirus cases. A total of 6,093 deaths are connected with the virus.
