The Banadir Regional Court in Mogadishu sentenced four officials from Ministry of Health for up to 18 years in prison for stealing Covid-19 funds. In April, Somalia Ministry of Health had indicated that between $42,000 to $45,000 would not be accounted for or was spent in unclear circumstances.

The jailed officials had been in custody for over 3 months. The Director General for Ministry of Health, Abdullahi Hashi Ali, was sentenced to nine years in prison and required to pay a fine of $2,366.

Meanwhile the director of administration, Mohamed Bule Mohamud, was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Finally, five other ministry officials were released after being found not guilty. Somalia, a country located on the horn of Africa has a population of 15 million people and 3,269 positive cases of Covid-19 have been confirmed and 93 deaths as per Johns Hopkins University.
