Solar powered planes is a technology which is being explored by researchers around the world. Scientists do not seem giving up until whatever is in their mind works in real life. There has been a series of innovations that are mind blowing including mobile phones and space shuttles.
Tesla Inc. is a company which came up with electric cars made a huge evolution in the automobile industry after launching the first rechargeable electric car. They have also advanced their cars to auto-pilot and recharging is done in solar powered stations.
On the aviation industry, their engineers were never left behind. They had to come up with something convincing to be in the race.
In 2016, they circumnavigated the earth using their newly invented solar powered plane. The plane is said to not have used a single drop of fuel in the whole circumnavigation.
It was covered with up to 17,000 solar panels which were spread on its wings the size of a Boeing 747. Explorer Bertrand Piccard and engineer Bernard Borschberg, both from Swiss, came up with the idea of using renewable energy in the flight.
The two engineers revealed the world can run entirely on clean energy. Its capacity might not match that of fuel engine, but this is a good start.

The solar powered plane was bought by Skydweller, a startup in the US where it will be used as pseudo-satellite.
Skydweller spent some months to modify the plane and has now completed 12 tests. The startup said it will use the plane as a drone to monitor utilization of resources and conserve the environment.
The solar powered plane is autopilot, but could need a pilot in the landing and take-offs. Skydweller claimed it had plan to make it all automatic.
