A drama ensured at Shurugwi Female Prison last week when a supposedly female prisoner turned out to be actually a male. Praise Mpofu, 22, was dressed as a woman when he was arrested. He is reported to be in the habit of dressing as a woman to trap make clients whom he would steal from.
Praise Mpofu was arrested after he stole from a man at Mkoba 6 suburb in Gweru. The victim paid for commercial sex services while under the impression that he was dealing with a woman. Upon reaching the home where they were to spend the night, Mpofu stole from the man and ran away. Days later he was spotted in Mkoba 6 and was arrested. At the time he was dressed as a woman in a blouse and a skirt. To compliment that image he too had a female hairstyle. He was wearing a bra stuffed to give the impression that he had large breasts.
Mpofu appeared before the Gweru Magistrate court and faced charges of theft. Up to this time, he never revealed that he was a male. The magistrate order for his remand at Shurugwi Female Prison.
As a result of hitches in logistical arrangements Mpofo was temporarily remanded at Gweru Young Offenders Prison where he spent two days with juvenile female offenders.
He was finally discovered after prison officials decided to transport him to Shurugwi Female Prison. Midland Prison spokesman confirmed this issue while he spoke with Masvingo Mirror.
“Yes, there was an inmate who came from ZRP through the magistrate’s court pretending to be a female. It was only identified at Shurugwi Female Prisons through our normal channels on admission that he was actually a male inmate, not a female as he was pretending to be. Mpofu was taken from Shurugwi female prison to Hwahwa Maximum Prison on the same day.”
The shocking discovery was made by a female nurse who is responsible for searching all new prisoners.
“Mpofu spend two days at Gweru Young Offenders prison where he did not divulge that he was a male and he was treated as a female. The matter came to light when he was to be detained at Shurugwi Female Prison that he was not a female. One could not figure out that Mpofu is a male he had a nice hairstyle, breasts and he was wearing a skirt just like a lady. Mpofu was arrested after he stole from a man who had hired him as a prostitute, Mpofu stole money and fled before he fulfilled the duties he was hired for.”
