15 years of continuous warfare with the Muslim peoples Ahmad Gran of the Sultanate of Adal. Christian Ethiopia had been generally victorious but now the tide turned against her due to the improved firepower of the Muslims.
The arrival of 450 well-armed Portuguese soldiers helped Christian empire from possible total extinction. In response to an appeal made by Emperor Lebna Dengel to the King of Portugal.
Emperor Dengel died in 1540, two years before the war came to an end. The Jesuit missionaries were sent to Ethiopia to win it to the Roman Catholic. Ethiopia had been converted to Christianity in the 4th Century. In 1603 Jesuit missionary Pero Paez arrived in Ethiopia.
