In Senegal all female sex workers are required to register with the police and be issued with a special identification card.
Basically, sex work is regulated by government policy.
The HIV prevalence in Senegal currently stands at 0.4% compared to 7.1% HIV prevalence rate in Southern and East African countries.
Further, Senegal has a 96% Muslim majority but sex workers are segregated and face plenty of stigma.
It’s important to note that registration sex workers is only open to women 21+ years. This means that man who practice sex work are discriminated against under this policy.
Despite the registration and issuance of cards, pundits have maintained that sex workers are sixteen times more likely to contract Sexually Transmitted diseases as compared to the general public.
