Sanctuary States: Oregon & California
Recently, California passed a new law making it a ‘sanctuary state.’
This is the second state after Oregon to become a sanctuary state for undocumented immigrants. Oregon was the first to pass a similar law three decades ago.
Under the law, all state agencies are prevented from targeting immigrants based on their illegal/undocumented status.
There is a total of 2.3 million undocumented immigrants in California. This is equivalent to half the population of Nairobi City in Kenya!
Robert Reich in his blog urges more states to pass similar laws to become “sanctuary states” to protect the undocumented immigrants. He argues that it is very expensive for any country to allocate resources towards finding and deporting all 11 million undocumented immigrants in America.
Finally, research has shown that these undocumented immigrants are less likely to commit a crime when compared to the native-born American citizens.
