Rwandan authorities have imposed a lockdown in parts of the capital, Kigali after a rise in coronavirus cases.
The interior ministry issued a statement directing the people of Gikondo Hill in Kicukiro District and those in parts on Mount Kigali in Nyarugenge District to stay home for the next 15 days.
The order was given on Thursday night and residents of the areas woke up on Friday morning unaware.
The interior ministry reinstated the lockdown ‘’based on analysis by health officials over coronavirus status in Rwanda.’’
In the past one week, 204 new coronavirus cases have been recorded, 21 of them in the capital, Kigali.
Rwanda was the first country in East Africa to go into strict lockdown after confirming its first case on March 21. The country eased the restrictions one and a half months later.
A total of 850 coronavirus cases have been recorded in Rwanda with the virus claiming two lives.
