Joao Alberto Silveira Freitas (black man) died after being beaten by security guards outside Carrefour Supermarket in Porto Alegre.
It is estimated that mixed race and blacks constitute 57% of Brazil’s population but make up 74% of all victims of lethal violence. This is according to Brazilian Forum on Public Safety – NGO.
Further, data shows that 79% of people killed by police in Brazil are blacks.
According to G1 (news website) Freitas has an argument with a Carrefour Supermarket employee and the employee called security. Two guards arrived (both white) and started beating the black man who later died within the premises.
Protests erupted with protesters chanting “carrefour killer!” among other phrases.
