Recently, Prof. Paul Wainaina refused to cede huge chunks of land of my Alma mater, Kenyatta University and he was forced to resign. The entire university council was also disbanded and a caretaker leadership was put in place.
This was after the university management refused to cede land for the construction of WHO logistics hub on a land adjacent to Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital.

The referral facility was the first area of disagreement. It was built with the aim of providing teaching and research for medical students at Kenyatta University. Later wrangles arose and it was made a parastatal.
This move saw the KU VC being evicted from the Board of Management and the KUTRH being an independent and separate entity.
Many people have said many things about this saga. The whispers are getting louder that this might be a case of interference of management of public institutions.
Now alumni are calling for the renaming of public institutions which bear the name of individuals.
One proponent is Ndindi Nyoro who suggested that Kenyatta University should change their name to “Githurai University.”
Professor Magoha, Cabinet Secretary for Education, was wrong when he said that all land belongs to government. There is no government land in Kenya, we have three categories of land: public, private and community land. The CS should seek for advice if he does not know. This clearly proves that no man is an island of knowledge.
