President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed that Kenyan flags and the EAC flag be flown at half-mast at Public buildings in Kenya in the memory of the late President of Burundi Pierre Nkurunziza.
President Pierre Nkurunziza died of cardiac arrest on June 9 aged 55 years.
He died at Karusi Fiftieth Anniversary Hospital.
Burundi held presidential elections on May 20. Ruling party candidate Evariste Ndayishimiye won with 69% of the votes cast.
President Nkurunziza’s health deteriorated on Monday afternoon and doctors tried to resuscitate him but to no avail.
“Burundi has lost a son, a President and a key figure of patriotism. He was an example to the people of Burundi as someone who respected God. I urge Burundians to remain calm and continue praying for the soul of the President,” Government Spokesman Prosper Ntahorwamiy said in a statement.
The government of Burundi announced a week of national mourning with the country’s flags flying at half-mast during the period.
