President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni of Uganda has declared Saturday a national prayer day for coronavirus.
According to President Museveni, the idea came from an unnamed citizen who told him of a vision in which he was to organize national prayers to help fight the deadly virus.
‘’A certain Ugandan came to me and told me that God had told him in a vision that I should organize National Prayers, scientifically organized, for God to deliver us from COVID 19,’’ Read Museveni’s tweet.
President Museveni urged Ugandans to pray in their houses.
‘’Therefore, by the powers given to the President of Uganda by Section 2(2) of the Public Holidays Act, I declare the 29th of August 2020, a day of National Prayers and a Public Holiday. Stay in your houses or Compounds and pray.’’ Read another tweet.
Uganda has recorded a total of 2,679 Covid-19 cases. The virus has also claimed 28 lives.
Uganda constantly recorded low numbers of daily Covid-19 cases. However, it has begun reporting increasing numbers of cases, particularly in the capital Kampala.
It is common for African states to turn to prayers in order to tackle the coronavirus pandemic.
In March, Kenya held an inter-religious service of prayers few days after the first coronavirus case was confirmed.
President John Pombe Magufuli at one time asked Tanzanians to pray away the coronavirus.
In June, president Magufuli declared Tanzania Covid-19 free thanks to prayers and fasting.
