Open contracting
International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) Kenya and Article 19 are doing some good work around open contracting through their collaborative project titled: Strengthening disclosure and citizen participation to improve value for money in public contracting in Africa. They hosted a two day open contracting workshop at Panafric Hotel in Nairobi on 2nd and 3rd May 2019.
The two organizations state that “every year, governments spend an estimated USD 9.5 trillion through contracts, but now, when, and where the money is spent is often not available to the public. Even when such information is available to the public, it is often difficult to access and process and it often carries restrictions on reuse.”
Kenya is among a number of African countries which have enacted the Access to Information Act. This law was enacted by the National Assembly on 30August, 2016.

The Access to Information Act was enacted with an intention of improving transparency and accountability in conducting of public affairs.
