717 rape cases were reported in Nigeria between January and May this year, amounting to one rape every five hours, Nigeria’s Police Chief says.
Mohammed Adamu described rape as serious and wicked crime and urged Nigerians to report any case.
Speaking after meeting President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja, Mr Adamu said that 799 suspects had been arrested and 631 had appeared in court.
However, he did not speak on the number of those who had been convicted.
Activists are concerned that not many trials result to one being found guilty.
There have been protests in Nigeria after recent victims were murdered after being raped.
The protesters were demanding action from the authorities and communities.
The police chief said that security agencies were working with the various stakeholders in areas of training together with the victims so as to gather evidence for successful prosecutions as part of the efforts to deal with the issue.
