Sharing is Caring

A teacher in Walvis Bay, Namibia has been suspended after racist remarks were posted on her Facebook account.

Wilma de Sousa, the Principal of The Hillside Christian College said the teacher’s views did not represent those of the school.

A decision to suspend her was reached after consultations with a legal team.

“We condemn any utterances placing any race, colour or people at a higher or lower level or position and want to distance ourselves from such hate speech. We believe and teach that we are all created equal before God,”       Wilma de Sousa said.

“We, together with our legal advisers, are currently dealing with the situation and the process will be fair, just and professional. We hereby deeply regret the offence caused and wish to apologise for the harm it’s done in our community, nation and the world at large.”

The teacher posted racist comments in connection with murder of a black Zimbabwean wood-carver in Namibia on Friday last week.

Two of those accused of being involved are white men.

A Namibian student in the United States was the one who alerted the school about the racist remarks.

The teacher’s comments come amid worldwide Black Lives Matter protests following the death of George Floyd.

Floyd, an African-American man, died in the custody of police in Minneapolis, United States.

A police officer was filmed kneeling on Floyd’s neck. He cried out for help as he was handcuffed and pinned to the ground.
