Nairobi County Assembly speaker Beatrice Elachi has resigned with her deputy John kamangu taking over in acting capacity.
Kamangu is the Member of County Assembly in Ruai.
Beatrice Elachi handed over her resignation on Tuesday morning.
Beatrice Elachi read out her resignation letter which was addressed to President Uhuru Kenyatta in a televised address.
“I humbly tender my resignation to President Uhuru Kenya. For the last few days there have been life threatening incidences. I appoint my deputy speaker, John Kamangu as acting speaker,” she said.
Recently, Elachi’s appointee for the Clerk’s position, Edward Gichana was blocked by the court.
Beatrice Elachi took over the Assembly in 2017. Her leadership has been marred by chaos and wrangles.
In July, Beatrice Elachi suspended plenary meetings to September after her office was notified of an impeachment motion against her.
Beatrice Elachi and her deputy John Kamangu were accused of corruption, impunity, disregard of the law and county orders, poor leadership among others.
