Health authorities in South Africa are struggling to contain a coronavirus outbreak at a school in Eastern Cape Province after about 180 pupils tested positive.
Makaula Senior Secondary School was closed on Tuesday and health officials say contact tracing is underway.
The South Africa Democratic Teacher’s Union has called for the closure of all schools in that area.
President Cyril Ramaphosa ordered the reopening of schools in early June. A total of 196 schools have been closed in the Eastern Cape Province since they were reopened.
The Eastern Cape Province has recorded more than 300 Covid-19 deaths. It’s the second hardest-hit after Western Cape Province that has recorded 1,500 deaths out of the country’s total of 1,990.
