Sharing is Caring

The criticism comes after Education Cabinet Secretary, George Magoha, pushed the reopening of schools from Monday 15th to Thursday, 18th August.

George Magoha had earlier communicated schools to open on 15th of Monday. Again, before that, he had directed the reopen on 11th on Thursday.

The changing of dates has caused confusion and the Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) claims that none of the stake holders were consulted with regards to the changes.

Considering the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) is still on with the tallying, parents, teachers, parents and stake holders are uncertain if the announced date will change if there will be further delay of presidential results.

The change of the school re-opening dates was triggered by the delay of the commission to conclude the process and announce the winner as the president.

“The decision was universally condemned by all education stakeholders, none of which was consulted in its making,” KUPPET Secretary General Akelo Misori said.

“Given the unpredictability of the changes, there is uncertainty whether the Minister will adhere to the new date, since the election programme is still unfolding.” He added.

The uncertainty of reopening of schools makes it difficult for schools, parents and teacher to plans for smooth learning.

“This is a sad state of affairs, given the immense financial and logistical factors involved in the re-opening of schools. To remedy the situation, the Minister must issue a statement on the comprehensive term dates for schools for the rest of the year,” KUPPET argued.
