“The locusts are invading the Eastern Africa region in exceptionally large swarms like never seen before,” said the Climate Prediction and Application Centre.
Currently, East Africa is struggling with locusts and Covid-19. Then there are floods which are sweeping across the countries causing plenty of destruction. These floods have been reported in Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia.
Analysts are predicting that food scarcity is the next tragedy in waiting.
The unusually wet weather has been accused on causing favourable conditions for the breeding of locusts in East Africa.
The war in Yemen is also to blame became the hands of the local authorities were full and hence they were unable to respond to locusts in their territory.
So far Gro Intelligence has reported that the locusts have destroyed 25 million hectares of farmland in Somalia, Kenya and Ethiopia.
Experts are predicts that the coronavirus pandemic is standing on the way of fighting locusts because the war requires many people to spray the insects and now the supply chain for insecticide has been brought to a standstill.
The Food and Agriculture Organization predicts that $154 million is required to fight the locusts in Yemen, Sudan, Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia. However, with the advent of floods in the equation the situation is worsened and more resources will be needed.
