Lille have signed forward Jonathan David from Gent for a reported fee of €30M to boost their striking options after losing Victor Osimhen to Napoli.
David has signed a five-year deal with the French side.
Osimhen scored 13 league goals foe Lille in the 2019-20 season and top European clubs were hunting for his signature. He ended up joining Serie A side Napoli at the end of July in a deal that could eventually be worth €54M.
David made his debut for Gent in 2018 and went on to score 37 goals in 83 matches for the Belgian side in all competitions.
The 20-year-old Canadian will wear the number 9 shirt at Lille, who will compete in next season’s UEFA Europa League after they finished fourth in Ligue 1.
He has also scored 11 goals in 12 senior appearances for Canada.
David told the Lille’s official website” I am very happy. I have looked forward to this day a lot, and it is a pleasure to be a Mastiff today.
I know the project set up at LOSC by the President, Luis Campos and Christophe Galtier. There is a very good team with good players. I want to play and improve, and I think this is the perfect place.
‘’I am a player who knows how to place himself on the pitch. I like to play with my qualities: technique and speed in particular. I can’t wait to meet the supporters.’’
