Lesotho has confirmed its first case of coronavirus – becoming the last country in the continent to record the virus.

Lesotho is completely surrounded by South Africa, which has confirmed over 11,000 coronavirus cases.

The health authorities in Lesotho said in a statement that the single case resulted from tests done on 81 travelers from Saudi Arabia and South Africa.

For weeks now, many have been asking how Lesotho managed to stave off the virus in spite of movement in and out of Lesotho and South Africa.

Hundreds of thousands of Basotho work in South Africa.

The border between the two countries was closed when the two countries went into lockdown at the end of March.

Only essential service providers were allowed to move back and forth.

Weeks ago, Lesotho’s Finance minister Moeketsi Majoro, in an interview with South Africa’s EyeWitness news, pleaded with those who wanted to be repatriated to remain in South Africa, fearing that some might come back with the virus.

Lesotho does not have necessary resources to test for coronavirus, so samples are being sent to South Africa’s National Institute for Communicable Diseases for testing.

Many have argued that it may lead to a delay in not only detecting the coronavirus cases but also in administering treatment.
