The Royal Spanish football Federation (RFEF) in conjunction with Laliga have agreed to extend the suspension of the 2019/2020 Laliga season indefinitely.
Major European football leagues and other sporting competitions have been put on hold due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
On March 12th, Laliga postponed all games to the start of April after Real Madrid players were forced to quarantine after one of the club’s basketball players tested positive for the deadly virus.
With Euro 2020 and the Copa America 2020 being postponed to next year, various clubs have time complete the season should the Covid-19 pandemic not persist.
However, Spain is still in a state of emergency as the government attempts to combat the spread of Coronavirus. The Laliga and RFEF therefore have decided that the League will resume when the environment is ‘safe’.
‘’The RFEF and Laliga agree the suspension of professional soccer competitions until the competent authorities of these government of Spain and the general state administration consider that they can be resumed and this does not pose any risk to health,’’ Read part of the RFEF statement.
‘’Both the RFEF and the Laliga want to show their greatest public gratitude to all those who are dedicating their best efforts to provide essential services to Spaniards, and we also wish to show our sincere remembrance for all the deceased and a warm embrace from the world of soccer for all families that are losing loved ones.’’
More than 33,000 cases of coronavirus have been reported in Spain with more than 2,000 deaths.
FC Barcelona are on top of the Laliga table with 58 points after 27 games. Real Madrid come second with 56.
