Kenyan police officers to be charged over curfew killings
According to a report by Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), at least 15 people have been killed by police during the nationwide dusk-to-dawn curfew aimed at combating the spread of coronavirus.
The report says six police officers will be charged with murder and assault. They are alleged to have involved in shootings while enforcing the coronavirus restrictions.
A different report by the UN human rights has documented widespread violence across the nation, including beating, sexual violence, property damage and use of ammunition and tear gas.
Police Spokesperson Charles Owino told the BBC that the findings in IPOA’s report were allegations.
Mr Owino said it was unfair to portray the police as killers at the time when they were on the forefront enforcing the Covid-19 restrictions.
The government of Kenya has pumped a lot of money into the police service since the 2007/8 post-election violence.
The 2007/8 post-election violence claimed over 1000 lives and at least 300,000 people were displaced.
The police were accused of causing up to 400 of the deaths.
However, critics say little has changed and those affected want justice.
