The Kenyan government has now banned movement in and out of Old Town in Mombasa and Eastleigh in Nairobi after the two areas registered double worrying coronavirus cases for the second day in a row.

Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe said the cessation of movement was to begin at 7PM on Wednesday and would last for 15 days.

The two areas are now perceived as coronavirus hotspots and all restaurants, eateries and markets will remain closed.

‘’There shall be cessation of movement in and out of Eastleigh area of Nairobi with effect from today May 6th, 2020 at 7PM for the next 15 days. There shall be cessation of movement in the area known as Old Town in Mombasa with effect from today May 6th at 7PM for the next 15 days,’’ Said Kagwe at a press address at Afya House.

‘’There will be closure of markets, restaurants and eateries within those areas – Eastleigh and Old Town – with effect from today May 6, 2020 at 7PM for the next 15 days.’’ He added.

Kagwe also stated that residents are free to move within and said that the measures are not meant to punish anybody, rather to protect them.

In Eastleigh, there are 68 confirmed coronavirus cases and 64 are from Old Town. The national total stands at 582.

The virus has claimed 26 lives in the country and 190 have recovered.
