Dr. Monica Juma Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Foreign Affairs issued a security alert on travelling to South Africa citing rising crime levels in the country. In that security alert issued to political and government officials Dr. Juma listed mugging, armed robberies, rape, theft, carjacking and burglary as some of the crimes which make South Africa unsafe.
According to Dr. Monica, the situation in South Africa became more worrying when visitors were being attacked near their hotels. Even the diplomatic community were being attacked and the South African authorities were doing nothing about it.
In the letter, all official delegations to South Africa were advised to arrive there before 6 p.m., avoid isolated areas and book into well established hotels. Use of public means of transport while in South Africa was also discouraged. Xenophobic attacks have been experienced in South Africa since 2008.
