Kenya was elected to the UN Security Council on Thursday after defeating Djibouti in a run-off vote.
With 191 0f 193 countries voting, Kenya received 129 votes against Djibouti’s 62. Kenya will now replace South Africa in the non-permanent seat.
Kenya failed to clinch the two thirds majority in the first round of votes. Kenya garnered 113 votes against Djibouti’s 78.
Kenya last served on the UN Security Council as a non-permanent members 23 years ago.
President Uhuru Kenyatta said the win was a ‘’demonstration of the country’s growing profile and influence in the community of nations as a steadfast and dependable development partner”.
President Kenyatta thanked Djibouti for being a ‘’worthwhile opponent’’ and African Union (AU) for its endorsement.
Kenya is now expected to enjoy a number of benefits accompanying the seat including creating linkages between AU and UN on solving regional conflicts and being the link for Africa in advocating for Africa’s favorable policies and reforms.
